ASX 200 opens in green; Materials leads gains

  • At 10:34 AM AEDT, the benchmark index was at 6,839.70 points, up 0.42%.
  • Materials registered maximum gains during the opening hour, was quoted 0.87% higher at 10:34 AM AEDT.

Australian equity benchmark S&P/ASX 200 opened in green today (27 October), gaining 28.80 points or 0.42% to 6,839.70 and setting a new 20-day high as of 10:34 AM AEDT.

Key pointers from the ASX market open today:

  • The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 was 0.42% higher at 6,839.70 points at 10:34 AM AEDT.
  • Whitehaven Coal Limited (ASX:MFG) and Sandfire Resources Limited (ASX:SFR) posted maximum gains and were 5.25% and 4.66% higher respectively (at 10:34 AM AEDT).
  • Core Lithium (ASX:CXO) and Bank of Queensland (ASX:BOQ) marked losses of 7.561% and 3.897% respectively.
  • Over the last five days, the index has gained 1.62%, but is down 8.13% on year-to-date basis.
  • Eight out of eleven major sectors opened in green.
  • Materials was the best performing sector during the opening hour, was 0.87% higher.
  • Financial was 0.40% up, followed by Utilities, which was 0.26% higher around 10:34 AM AEDT.
  • A-REIT was 0.08% lower at the same time. Consumer Staples was 0.06% lower.
  • A-VIX was 2.17% weak, All Ords was 0.44% up at 10:34 AM AEDT.

 

Global equity Indices

Stocks in the US closed mixed on Wednesday (26 October). At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished marginally up gaining merely 0.01%, the S&P 500 ended 0.74% or 29 points lower and the Nasdaq Composite lost 2.04% or 228 points to 10,970.99 on Wednesday.

Disappointing results from tech stocks weighed heavily upon the US markets. Technology giants like Microsoft and Alphabet were seen missing expectations.

Bond Yield

In the bond markets, the Australian 10-year bond yield stood at 3.862% at 10:52 AM AEDT today.

Commodities

Gold futures were quoted at US$1,670.70 as of 10:53 AM AEDT today.

Crude oil WTI futures for December delivery were quoted at US$88.09/bbl and Brent Oil, around the same time, was at US$94.15/bbl.
