Climate Change: How Will Greta Thunberg And Attenborough Together Make A Difference

The world is getting warmer. Climate change and global warming, often used interchangeably, refers to the long-term rise in the temperature of the planet Earth. It is not a myth, hoax or a conspiracy amongst scientist, it is very much real.

As climate change crisis across the world escalate, the need of the hour requires mitigation to avoid the unmanageable. Changing weather patterns are harming food production while rising sea levels pose the risk of catastrophic flooding in the coastal regions. The lives of our future generations are largely at stake as the forecast suggests and climate change is the defining issue of our time.

Despite the realization of the seriousness of this issue, avoiding and delaying drastic action today, is expected to have repercussions for the inhabitants of earth as adapting to these environment changes, or for that matter plain survival is going to get difficult and costly in the future.

We are already in the early stages of climate change and a demonstration of the same as been the recent intense nightmarish bush fires in Australia that have been powerful enough to flip over large trucks.

The key issue at the heart of all the climate change buzz is that young people would be compelled to inherit a world that will not work as nearly as well as it did for the aging adults who have been running it till now, at the cost of the future.

2019 marked a turning point as the world prepares to deal with climate change.

For decades, researchers and activists have struggled to get the world leaders to take climate threat seriously; however, 2019 witnessed a remarkable teenager girl stir up the world. Greta Thundberg is now at the fore front of the global movement against climate change. Beginning August 2018, Ms Greta skipped school every Friday, immersing herself in study of climate change, resolving to educate the world of this emergency. She camped outside the Swedish Parliament, holding a banner stating, “Skolstrejk för klimatet meaning “School Strike for Climate.”

Since then, the girl has addressed heads of state at various United Nations rendezvous, sparred with the President of the United States, even met with the Pope, and in the process inspired around 4 million people to join the global climate strike on 20 September 2019, that turned out to be the largest ever climate demonstration in the history of mankind.

Greta is making a difference. With her compelling voice, she has sent a call to those willing to contribute in mitigating the irreversible effects of climate change and convinced major world leaders to make commitments that they have been dodging for quite some time, urging them to delineate an action plan.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January 2019, Greta Thundberg addressed the annual convention of CEOs and world leaders stating, “I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act.”

Recently, the Guardian connected Ms Greta and Sir David Frederick Attenborough, an English broadcaster and natural historian, through a Skype call whereby which the two shared their gratitude and mutual admiration with one another. The two, born almost eighty years apart, wanted to avoid the carbon impact of flying.

Attenborough is widely known for his narration on nature documentaries such as Blue Planet, which largely sparked Ms Greta’s interest in the environment and enthusiasm for preserving the natural world. Mr Attenborough told some popular media houses that tackling climate change and protecting nature are not just political or scientific challenges, but they also need to be communicated in an effective manner. He believes that Greta Thunberg would be soon able to meet that challenge as well and informed that a debut documentary about her rise as a climate activist will premier in 2020 on Hulu, a US-based subscription video on demand service.

The teenage, as per Attenborough, has aroused the sleeping world oblivious to their own future and took on the daunting task of marching through the streets, exhibiting exemplary bravery and purpose driven action.

He expressed his disappointment in governments of key nations including but not limited to Brazil, Australia and the United States, in turning a blind eye to the problem, assuming triviality of the issue.

Both the teen activities and Mr Attenborough, during their discussions, sent out a request to politicians from every government to ensure a positive outcome at the 2020 UN climate talks to be held in Scotland, United Kingdom.

These two individuals have set the stage for leaders in power today to go forth and do their bit and at least demonstrate some tangible progress towards what is being perceived as a fatal threat to human survival, even if concerns the future generations more than themselves.
