The Kookaburras have earned a shootout bonus-point win over Great Britain in an enthralling FIH Pro League encounter in Christchurch after scores were locked 3-3 at fulltime.
Joel Rintala scored his second hat-trick in as many matches, having done so on Anzac Day in the 3-0 win over New Zealand, opening the scoring on six minutes when he won a penalty corner and then converted it with a drag flick past Great Britain goalkeeper James Mazarelo.
Looking to reverse a 2-1 loss to GB last Sunday, Australia went close to doubling their lead at Nga Puna Wai Hockey Stadium through Jack Welch and Nathan Ephraums.
Great Britain looked for a response and found it when Sam Ward, who scored a hat-trick on Friday against the Black Sticks, managed to beat Andrew Charter.
The Kookaburras survived two penalty corners early in the second half before going behind when Zach Wallace scored from a rebound after Daniel Beale blocked the initial drag flick on the line.
Two minutes into the last quarter the Kookaburras were level at 2-2 when Aran Zalewski found Rintala in the circle and his ball across was deflected in off GB captain David Ames' stick.
Ephraums had a penalty stroke saved soon after and Rupert Shipperley then beat Kookaburras substitute goalkeeper Johan Durst to put Great Britain back in front.
As the game entered the final minute, more quick thinking and determination from Zalewski saw him find Rintala who struck his first-time shot to secure his treble and send the match to a shootout, which the Aussies won 4-2.
The Kookaburras wrap up their 'mini tournament' in Christchurch against New Zealand on Sunday.
