EU could block vaccine export amid a shortage of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 shots

The EU stated that AstraZeneca intends to deliver just 100 million out of 300 million to be delivered by June 2021.

EU leaders voiced disappointment on 25 March 2021 for a substantial shortage in contracted deliveries of Oxford-AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccines, while the third wave of infections surged in the European nations.

With immunisation programs moving far behind from Britain and the US, the Executives warn that they would block COVID-19 vaccine exports by AstraZeneca until the Company provides the vaccine shots as pledged to the European Union (EU). The EU has only administered 14 jabs for every 100 people, while the UK has administered 46 per 100.

Moreover, AstraZeneca promised to deliver 300 million vaccine shots to EU nations by the end of June 2021 but now intends to provide only 100 million.

The European Commission warned to unveil plans to block the vaccine shipment to nations with higher vaccination rate, as the third wave of coronavirus infection has been surging in Europe.

In the EU, the vaccinations drive is running behind from the US and the UK. With the rising cases of COVID-19 in the third wave, the leaders are advising to block the vaccine export if the vaccine developer fails to deliver the shots as promised.

Moreover, the European Commission’s plan to tighten vaccine exports would allow greater scope to block shipments to countries with higher vaccination rates.

The troubled vaccine rollout in the European Union has led to a dispute with Britain. As per the EU official, Britain has imported 21 million doses manufactured in Europe.

However, Britain stated that the country did an excellent job negotiating with the vaccine developers and arranging supply chains for them.

If the European Union decides to block shipments overseas, it could provoke conflicts with the UK.
