A pro-Palestinian demonstration took place outside the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Monday, drawing attention but causing no major disruptions to trading operations. Despite the intensity of the protest, none of the demonstrators reached the historic trading floor.
The NYSE set up security barriers around the building on Broad Street, lower Manhattan, to maintain order. Protesters, representing Jewish Voices for Peace, managed to breach some of the perimeter and began chaining themselves to the security fences and doors. According to videos shared on social media, some demonstrators were arrested and removed from the scene by law enforcement.
Due to the protests, access to the building was restricted for a time. By midday, the New York Police Department (NYPD) had removed most of the individuals from the security perimeter, though a crowd still remained outside the gate. Throughout the protest, chants like "We want housing, not genocide" and "Let Gaza live" were heard via livestream on social media.
Jewish Voices for Peace, the organization behind the demonstration, made a statement on social media, connecting the protest to broader issues. They highlighted how the stock values of defense companies had increased this year, alleging that the U.S. economy profits from global conflicts.
Despite the tension, no significant interference with stock exchange operations occurred, and the protest remained primarily outside the secured area.
