US Stocks Decline Ahead of Earnings Season

The three major U.S. stock market indexes the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and NASDAQ Composite ended lower on Monday, April 12, 2021, ahead of the earnings season. Technology and energy stocks declined the most on Monday.

The S&P 500 declined 0.02 percent to 4,127.99. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.16 percent to 33,745.40 and NASDAQ Composite Index declined 0.36 percent to close at 13,850 on Monday. The small-cap Russell 2000 was down 0.43 percent to 2,233.78.

Major banks including J P Morgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo & Company, Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., Bank of America Corporation and Citigroup Inc. will report their quarterly results this week, marking the start of earnings season.

The U.S. budget deficit soared 454 percent year over year in March to US$660 million, according to the data from the Treasury Department. Total budget receipts during the month rose 13 percent, while total budget outlays jumped 161 percent. The deficit during the first six months of fiscal year 2021 widened 130 percent year over year to US$1.71 trillion.

Microsoft Corp. on Monday said it agreed to buy Massachusetts-based artificial intelligence company Nuance Communications Inc. in an all-cash deal valued at US$19.7 billion, including debt.

Top Gainers

Top performers on S&P 500 included NVIDIA Corp. (5.62%), Conagra Brands Inc. (3.70%), Tesla Inc. (3.69%) and Fortive Corp. (3.66%).

Celcuity Inc. (29.35%), Lucira Health Inc. (27.01%), Wilhelmina International Inc. (25.18%) and Life Sciences Corp. (23.00%) were the top performers on NASDAQ.

On Dow Jones, Dow Inc. (1.03%), Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. (0.96%), Nike Inc. (0.88%) and Honeywell International Inc. (0.71%) gained the most.

Top Losers

Top laggards on S&P 500 included IPG Photonics Corp. (5.54%), Carnival Corp. (5.29%), Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (5.05%) and ViacomCBS Inc. (5.04%).

On Dow Jones, Intel Corp. (4.18%), Apple Inc. (1.32%), Boeing Co. (1.13%) and Chevron Corp. (1.11%) were the laggards.

Tian Ruixiang Holdings Ltd. (79.47%), iRhythm Technologies Inc. (39.47%), Canaan Inc. (29.62%) and Greenwich Lifesciences Inc. (26.96%) were among top losers on NASDAQ.

Volume Movers

Top volume movers are Apple Inc. (19.98M), Nuance Communications Inc. (15.97M), Canaan Inc. (15.46M), Sundial Growers Inc. (14.96M), ViacomCBS Inc. (13.17M), Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (12.35M), Intel Corp. (12.04M) and Castor Maritime Inc. (10.27M).

Futures & Commodities

Gold futures fell 0.70 percent to US$1,732.65 per ounce on Monday. Silver declined 1.93 percent to US$24.837 per ounce while copper fell 0.57% percent to US$ 4.0170.

Brent oil futures edged up 0.60 percent to US$63.33 while WTI crude was up 0.74 percent to US$59.76 per barrel.

Bond Market

The 30-year Treasury bond yield decreased slightly by 0.21 percent to 2.334 on Monday, while the 10-year bond yield was up 0.09 percent to 1.668.

US Dollar Futures Index declined 0.09 percent to US$92.115.
