The airport ground handling company Swissport is planning to cut more than 4,500 jobs in the UK as the aviation industry reels from the coronavirus pandemic. The company, which handles services such as passenger baggage and cargo for airlines, on Wednesday began a consultation process that is expected to result in 4,556 workers being made redundant, more than half of its 8,500-strong UK workforce. Swissport was already under pressure at the start of the crisis when the collapse of the regional airline Flybe put smaller UK airports at risk.
UK adults spent a quarter of their waking day online during lockdown. During April, adults spent an average of four hours a day online, up from three-and-a-half in September 2019. The pandemic has radically changed online behaviour. Twitch, saw visitors increase from 2.3 million in January to 4.2 million in April. TikTok reached 12.9 million UK visitors in April, up from 5.4 million in January. Video conferencing app Zoom was up from 659,000 users in January to 13 million in April.
Retail giant Debenhams has revealed when its intu Potteries store will finally reopen - as Stoke-on-Trent's biggest shopping centre faces yet more financial uncertainty. The department store had been expected to reopen on June 15 when 'non-essential' shops were allowed to open for the first time following a relaxation of the Government's lockdown rules. But the shutters remained down at its store within the intu Potteries shopping centre and it remains closed this week. Now Debenhams has revealed its flagship outlet will reopen on Friday, June 26.
