Pennon Group PLC (LSE:PNN), the parent company of South West Water, has earmarked £16 million to address the fallout from a cryptosporidium water quality incident that occurred in Brixham over the summer. This fund will be used to provide enhanced compensation for affected customers, support the distribution of bottled water over an eight-week period, and implement various measures to prevent future issues.
The incident, which caused an outbreak of diarrhoea affecting at least 22 people, led to Pennon temporarily cutting off 16,000 households from the main water supply. The company faced significant backlash and was compelled to issue an apology, with chief executive Susan Davy admitting that Pennon had “fallen significantly short” in maintaining water quality standards for the impacted community.
To address the contamination, Pennon executed a comprehensive plan, including flushing and cleaning the water network 27 times, replacing affected sections of the 30-kilometre pipeline, and installing specialised localised filters and ultra-violet treatment plants. The company described the incident as an “incredibly rare event” and emphasised its commitment to restoring customer confidence in its water services.
In a trading update on Thursday, Pennon stated that the measures taken were aimed not only at resolving the immediate issue but also at preventing such incidents in the future. The £16 million allocation highlights Pennon's commitment to rectifying the impact on the local community and strengthening its operational resilience.
The company has been under increased scrutiny as water quality and safety remain a top concern for customers and regulators alike. The swift response and financial commitment indicate Pennon’s efforts to demonstrate accountability and restore its reputation following this serious public health issue.
