The government has been cautioned by Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer and Sir Patrick Vallance, chief scientific advisor that by mid-October 2020, the daily coronavirus cases could rise to a level of 50,000 a day in the UK, in case no measures are taken to curb the rapidly rising infections. The UK government officials have confirmed that the Joint Biosecurity Centre has recommended for the Covid-19 alert level to be moved up from level 3 at present to level 4 on an immediate basis. Earlier, it was lowered to level 3 on 19 June 2020, when the infection rate was seen to be steadily moving down across the nation.
The infections are increasing at a fast pace across all four nations of the Great Britain namely England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
The number of Covid-19 infections in the UK totalled 4368 on 21 September, that took the total number of infections to 398,625. The number of daily infections were recorded to be 2621 a week back on 14 September 2020, which shows that the infections are rising at a fast pace.
The level 4 alert announcement is expected to be formally made by the prime minister Boris Johnson very soon. It is definitely expected to come with more restrictions in place, whether it is accompanied by a second lockdown in any high-risk area or not.
