Aldi will spend £3.5 billion more on UK-produced food and drink annually to support British suppliers.
- The move will benefit more than 1,000 small businesses and is expected to create 4,000 new jobs.
- The company will also be investing £500 million in new stores, distribution centres in 2021.
- The company will be paying all smaller suppliers without delay and in this regard has extended the agreement to the end of 2021. The move will help over 1000 small businesses in its supply chain.
- The company had introduced the immediate payment system for small suppliers at the start of the pandemic led crisis and now with its extension will be paying the small suppliers with a turnover of less than £1 million immediately.
- Expressing the optimism of the discount supermarket, the chief executive Giles Hurley, stated that the company is expecting a considerable improvement in sales in the next year as it will expand to more locations in the United Kingdom.
- He further added that with the majority of supplies coming from the nation itself, the business growth would result into more job creation in the companies supply chain in the UK.
- The company has created 3,000 permanent roles this year after grocery sales surged during the coronavirus pandemic.
- It is worth noting that due to more people switching to shopping from home, the discount retailers’ online sales of non-food and wine soared 70 per cent this year, up from 40 per cent growth it had reported in the previous one.
