The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated an investigation into Ticketmaster following the sale of tickets for the highly anticipated Oasis reunion tour. The probe focuses on the company’s controversial use of "dynamic pricing" and whether its practices may have violated consumer protection laws.
The CMA is investigating if Ticketmaster engaged in "unfair commercial practices" during the ticket sale process. It will examine whether consumers were pressured into making quick purchasing decisions, possibly at higher prices than initially expected. Additionally, the regulator will assess whether buyers were provided with clear and timely information about the dynamic pricing model, which adjusts ticket prices based on demand. The goal is to determine if this pricing mechanism was explained transparently and how it affected the overall ticket-buying experience.
The investigation remains in its early stages, and the CMA plans to engage with Ticketmaster directly while gathering evidence from multiple sources. This may include input from the band’s management, event organizers, and other stakeholders involved in the ticket distribution process.
To build a comprehensive understanding of the situation, the CMA is also encouraging fans to share their experiences regarding the purchase or attempted purchase of Oasis tickets. Fans who encountered difficulties or unexpected price changes during the checkout process are being asked to submit evidence. This feedback will help the authority evaluate whether Ticketmaster's sales practices adhered to existing consumer protection laws.
CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell emphasized the importance of fairness in the ticket-buying process. She acknowledged the frustrations felt by many fans, stating, "It’s clear that many people felt they had a bad experience and were surprised by the price of their tickets at check-out." Cardell expressed the CMA’s intent to thoroughly investigate any issues raised to ensure that the consumer protection laws have not been breached.
In addition to the specific focus on Ticketmaster’s practices regarding the Oasis tour, the CMA is also reviewing broader issues surrounding the use of dynamic pricing in the ticketing industry. The authority noted that the government may introduce measures to regulate the use of dynamic pricing in future ticketing policies. The CMA has indicated its willingness to assist the government in any efforts to develop regulations related to this pricing model.
