New programme of community events launches with Repair Café

The recent AGM of Gerrards Cross Community Association (GXCA) saw a new executive board elected to oversee the long-established community charity.

Marcia Bell, the new chair of GXCA has a long history with the centre, having been a life-long member. “GXCA is a very special community asset. It provides not only a home for special interest groups and sports clubs such as GX Squash, but it also hosts a diverse range of community events for Diwali to Burns Night, quiz nights to comedy, as well as hosting one of the largest jumble sales in the UK.”

“After the challenges of COVID and energy price increases, coupled with our ageing membership, the new board is aiming to attract new members with a programme of activities for all. The centre’s been one of the best kept secrets in Gerrards Cross. We want it to thrive for all as it approaches its 80th anniversary.”

The first new event Repair Café @ GXCA took place on 30th November when friendly, skilled volunteers fixed small household items or showed owners how to repair them for a small donation. 70% of items were repaired and visitors enjoyed home-made cakes and refreshments in the relaxed surroundings.

Repair Café @ GXCA returns Saturday, January 18, 2025, and Saturday, February 22 with specialists offering electrical including vacuum cleaners, mechanical, woodworking, upholstery and sewing repairs. The new GXCA board say this is an opportunity for the community to learn, meet neighbours, and make a difference together by reducing waste.

For younger residents, Saturday 21st December sees Mrs Claus host an activity day for children aged from 4-10, allowing parents to drop off their children in a safe, festive environment and enjoy some stress-free shopping or relaxation time.

The annual Christmas pantomime suitable for the whole family, returns to GXCA with a production of Sleeping Beaty by The Panto Company on 21-22 December. Limited tickets are still available.

The new Trustees also announced GXCA would no longer be backing the padel court development on the site. “We’ve listened to members and neighbours and whilst padel would be a great addition to sports facilities in Gerrards Cross, the proposed site is just too close to homes and our precious Lutyens War Memorial. We’re committed to operating public tennis courts and are now seeking funding to refurbish the existing tennis courts,” confirmed new GXCA President Guy Hearn.
