The roof of Australia's high commission in the Solomon Islands has collapsed after an earthquake, but officials are safe.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is working to confirm the safety of other Australians after a magnitude 7.0 quake rocked the Pacific nation.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there were no known injuries, but the collapsed roof indicated damage throughout the city.

Commission staff were moved to higher ground after a tsunami warning, which has since passed.

All staff have been accounted for and the high commission remains operational.

"The high commission is seeking to confirm the safety of all Australians," Mr Albanese told parliament on Tuesday.

"There are difficulties because phone lines have gone down."

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has been in touch with the Solomon Islands government and offered Australia's support.

An Australian member of the Solomon Islands Assistance Force has been deployed to the National Disaster Management Office to assist in co-ordination.

"We are a steadfast friend and partner to Solomon Islands," Senator Wong said.
