Min Woo Lee says fans' sustained chanting of his name while on the 17th green at the Australian PGA Championship is one of the highlights of his career.

The big-time performer was the poster boy in the tournament's last staging in January, but an undercard this week thanks to the return of Queensland heavyweights Adam Scott and Cameron Smith.

But the West Australian has been surprised by his popularity at Brisbane's Royal Queensland, where he will begin the final round seven-under and four shots behind leader Cameron Smith.

He'll play in the second-last pairing after Yan Wei Liu and Masahiro Kawamura finished one shot ahead and three behind Smith after Saturday's third round.

A par on the party hole 17th - DJs pump music non-stop and the stands and beer garden are packed by rowdy fans - came during a crucially solid final stretch for the 24-year-old.

"The Masters (finishing 14th) was very solid, playing in front of the Spanish crowd (finishing third in back-to-back tournaments) was amazing but the standout was 17," Lee said of his season highlights after carding a three-under 68.

"That's something you don't really get, people screaming my name for two, three minutes and that was actually really special.

"Probably up there (in the) top three moments in my life actually; it was really awesome."

Lee started three-under par but birdied his first two holes and would have rounded the turn just two shots off the pace if his putt on the ninth hole hadn't stopped on the lip.

A bogey on the 10th was his only blemish, Lee unscathed as the wind finally made an appearance to change the complexion of the course and send hospitality umbrellas flying.

"I did bounce back really good today and that's what you've got to do ... hopefully tomorrow's the same or even better," Lee said.

"It'd be amazing (to go up against Cam); that's why we play golf, he's a top golfer for a reason and I'm striving to be that."
