A man accused of stabbing a senior constable in the shoulder shortly after officers responded to reports of a disturbance has been charged with attempted murder.
The 50-year-old police officer was allegedly stabbed on the street outside a home in Rothwell, north of Brisbane, just before 9.30am on Monday.
His alleged attacker was taken to hospital with a stomach wound and remains under police guard.
He is due to appear in Redcliffe Magistrates Court via video link on Tuesday, charged with attempted murder, serious assault police while armed, going armed to cause fear, and wilful damage.
A police car was also damaged when the man allegedly jumped on it before the attack.
Responding officers drew a firearm and taser as they tried to subdue the man, and the taser was used before the man was taken into custody.
Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said the incident should never have happened, recalling three other officers who lost their lives at work.
"I'm just very fortunate that one of my colleagues is in hospital getting treatment, and it's not worse," he told Nine's Today program.
Constables Matthew Arnold and Rachel McCrow were shot in a premeditated attack carried out by family trio Nathaniel, Gareth and Stacey Train in December last year.
Their deaths follow that of Senior Constable Dave Masters, who was struck on the Bruce Highway in June 2021 while responding to a suspected stolen vehicle.
The injured officer is expected to be released from hospital on Tuesday.
