While most people fall for the shopping frenzy, some choose to carefully invest in consumer stocks during this time of the year.

Here are four stocks from consumer space for investors to explore this Halloween: Maple Leaf Foods Inc (TSX:MFI), Aritzia Inc (TSX:ATZ), Canada Goose Holdings Inc (TSX:GOOS), and Goodfood Market Corp (TSX:FOOD).

 

Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSX:MFI)

Current Stock Price: C$24.39

 

Canada-based Maple Leaf Foods is into the business of preparing, producing, and supplying packaged meat products to the markets of Canada, Mexico, the United States and Japan. Current market capitalization of the company is C$3.02 billion.

The stock declined by 19.26 per cent year-to-date.

Earnings-per-share (EPS) is C$0.43. The company offers positive return on equity (RoE) and Return on Assets (RoA) at 2.72 per cent and 1.47 per cent, respectively. Quarterly dividend payout is C$0.16, yielding 2.707 per cent.

In the third quarter 2020 financial results (for the period ended September 30, 2020), Maple’s net earnings increased to C$66 million, as compared to C$13.4 million in the same period last year. Sales rose by 6.2 per cent year-over-year to C$1057.2 million in Q3 2020. This increase in sales was driven by plant protein groups and meat products.

Its free cash flow as of September 30, stood at C$60.03 million as compared to C$37.99 million. The cash and cash equivalents of the firm was C$178.19 million in Q3 2020, as compared to C$70.76 million in the same period last year. Gross profit of C$228.11 million, as compared to C$139.7 million in Q3 2019.

 

Canada Goose Holdings Inc. (TSX:GOOS)

Stocks of Canada Goose Holdings, one of the leading luxury apparel manufacturers in the world, have declined 6.87 per cent this year. However, the stock has gained 2.36 per cent month-to-date.

The company has a current market capitalization of C$2.57 billion. Earnings-per-share is C$1.19. The stock holds profit-to-equity (P/E) ratio of 37.30, profit-to-book (P/B) ratio of 10.102 and profit-to-cash flow (P/CF) ratio of 28.50.

Return on equity (RoE) and Return on Assets (RoA) is 32.17 per cent and 11.47 per cent, respectively.

Canada Goose total revenue was C$26.1 million for first quarter fiscal year 2021 (ended June 28, 2020), as compared to C$71.1 million in Q1 2020. Gross profit dropped to C$4.8 million as compared to C$40.9 million a year ago. Net loss widened to C$50.1 million from C$29.4 million a year ago.

The company will announce second quarter 2021 financial results on November 5.

 

Aritzia Inc. (TSX:ATZ)

Current Stock Price: C$20.24

Despite the turmoil in retail industry, this apparel stock has gained by 6.09 per cent YTD. The stock is also up nearly 16 percent QTD.

Earnings-per-share (EPS) is C$0.27. The stock holds profit-to-book (P/B) ratio of 7.203, profit-to-equity (P/E) ratio of 77.50 and P/CF ratio of 12.10. Return on equity (RoE) and Return on Assets (RoA) is 9.89 per cent and 2.60 per cent, respectively.

The C$ 1.71-billion firm’s net revenue decreased 17 per cent to C$200.2 million in second quarter fiscal 2021 (ended August 30, 2020). Ecommerce revenue increased by 82.3 per cent YoY.

Gross profit decreased to C$70.4 million, as compared to C$95.4 million in Q2 2020. Net loss for the period was C$0.9 million in Q2 2021, as compared to net income of C$17.9 million in the same period last year. Cash and cash equivalents for Q2 2021 was C$207.3 million, as compared to C$30 million at the end of Q2 last year.

 

Goodfood Market Corp. (TSX:FOOD)

Current Stock Price: C$8.81

 

Goodfood Market Corp delivers fresh ingredients to its subscribers in the form of a meal kit to prepare easy meals at home. The firm ranks made it to the TSX30 rankings in 2020 that lists Canada's top performing stocks over the past three years based on certain parameters.

Current market capitalization of the firm is C$584.58 million. The stock holds profit-to-book (P/B) ratio of 33.885 and profit-to-cash flow (P/CF) ratio of 157.10. The stock gained 185.94 per cent YTD, and 4.19 per cent QTD.

According to the second quarter results for period ended February 29, 2020, the company’s revenues were C$58.8 million, a 61 per cent increase C$36.59 million in Q2 2019.
