 TSX Trading Volume Up 37% To C$ 198 Billion In 2020

 

The share trading volume across platforms owned by the TMX Group increased by a nearly 42 per cent in 2020, the company said in its latest trading statistics report. It also recorded almost 34 per cent boost in its value for the year.

The Toronto-based financial service, which operates equities, derivatives, markets exchanges, etc., shared the December 2020 data for its four marketplaces – Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), Toronto Stock Exchange Venture (TSXV), Toronto Stock Exchange Alpha (TSXA) and Montréal Exchange (MX).

 

What Do 2020 TMX Numbers Say?


All the TMX equities marketplaces in total saw over 17.7 billion stocks trade hands in December 2020, up from 10.3 billion year-over-year (YoY). Their value amounted to C$ 220 billion, a substantial increase from that of C$ 153 billion in December 2019.

There was a total of 27.1 million transactions across all TMX exchanges last month.

On a daily basis, the TMX equities platforms saw an average of 865.8 million share trading volume, C$ 10,775.3 million in value and 1.32 million transactions.

TSX December 2020 Numbers


On the TSX, over 9.2 billion stocks exchanged hands in the month of December last year. On a daily basis, this number averaged at nearly 450 million.

Overall stock trading volume jumped nearly 37 per cent in 2020, while its value increased by over 34 per cent.

Transactions stood at 22.6 million last month, valuing at C$ 198 billion.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed trading at 17,433.36 in December, up from 17,063.43 YoY.

 

TSXV December 2020 Numbers


TSX’s junior platform TSXV saw a share movement volume of 6.5 billion last month, up from 2.7 billion YoY. On a daily basis, this number averaged at 321.4 million.

Trading volume jumped about 47 per cent by December 2020 to 52.6 billion, while transactions climbed by over 50 per cent to 12.1 million.

The share trading valued at C$ 23.3 billion last year, up by nearly 41 per cent.

The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index closed trading at 875.36 last year, up from 577.54 in December 2019.
