The TSX Composite Index was back above the 21,000-point mark after energy grew 4.6 per cent by market close Thursday, October 28. With all the sectors posting gains, the index saw a single-day gain of 242.54 points, its highest since June 1.
IT was up 3.12 per cent, base metals was up 1.23 per cent and industrials 1.14 per cent to see the index close at 21,197.53 points, up 1.16 per cent.

Volume active
It is no surprise then, given the gains made by energy, that the top three most traded stocks came from that sector. The stock that was traded the most was Suncor Energy Inc with 18.5 million shares exchanging hands, followed by Crescent Point Energy Corp where 8.69 million shares exchanged hands, and Cenovus Energy Inc with 6.19 million shares exchanging hands.
Movers and laggards

Wall Street update
The bullishness extended south of the border too with Wall Street posting gains. While Apple gained almost 2.5 per cent during the day’s trading, it fell after market’s close when the tech giant announced its fourth-quarter earnings that failed to meet expectations. At the time of writing, it was 3.65 per cent in the red after CEO Tim Cook said the supply chain crisis was to blame. Microsoft is now within 117 billion away from becoming the world’s biggest company by market cap.
The three major indices started the day in green growing gradually before accelerating towards close. Nasdaq grew 1.39 per cent, 212.28 points to 15,448.12. The S&P 500 rose 0.98 per cent or 44.74 points to 4,596.42 points, while the Dow was up 0.68 per cent or 239.79 points to 35,730.48 points.
Commodity update
Gold grew 0.21 per cent and traded at US$ 1,802.60. Brent oil fell 0.31 per cent to US$ 84.32/bbl, while crude oil rose 0.18 per cent to US$ 82.81/bbl.
Currency news
The loonie was up against the US dollar on October 28, while USD/CAD ended in the red at 1.2342, down 0.11 per cent.
The US Dollar Index had a red day against the basket of major currencies Thursday and ended at 93.36, down 0.47 per cent.
Money market
Thursday saw the US 10-year bond yield gain 1.81 per cent and end at 1.578.
The Canada 10-year bond yield grew 3.34 per cent on October 28 and ended at 1.673.
