S&P/TSX composite settles lower, dragged by energy and industrial stocks

Canada’s benchmark equity index S&P/TSX Composite settled lower at 16,503.06, down 1.57% or 45.22 points on Thursday. The energy index declined 1.57%, followed by communication services index down 1.05%. The TSX Venture index traded 15.68 points or 2.16% lower at 741.39.

Stocks prices of Altus Group Limited, Maxar Technologies Inc, Dye & Durham Limited, Andlauer Healthcare Group Inc, Savaria Corporation hit 52-week high on the Toronto Stock Exchange while shares of Charlotte's Web Holdings Inc, and Just Energy Group Inc touched a new 52-week low in the intraday session.

On Wall Street: Equity indices of the Wall Street were mixed on Thursday. The S&P 500 hunkered down for the second straight day by 0.20% to 3,373.43 while the Dow Jones Industrials slumped 80.12 points or 0.29% at 27,896.72. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 30.27 points or 0.27% to 3,373.43 to extend the gains for the second consecutive day.

On Macro Front: The Bank of Canada slashed the benchmark mortgage rate for the third time this year. The rate now stands at 4.79 per cent, after decreasing to 4.94 per cent in May and 5.04 per cent in March.

Top Movers: Altus Group Limited (up 8.29 cents or 19.97% to CAD 49.80), Dye & Durham Limited (up 2.91 cents or 16.63% to CAD 20.41), Andlauer Healthcare Group Inc. (up 4.80 cents or 12.85% to CAD 42.85), Exchange Income Corporation (up 3.1 cents or 10.75% to CAD 32.03),respectively.

Bottom Movers: Charlotte's Web Holdings Inc. (down 0.21 cents or 31.34% to CAD 0.46), dynaCERT Inc. (down 0.07 cents or 30.0% to CAD 0.18) and Hut 8 Mining Corp. (down 0.06 cents or 20.37% to CAD 0.22) and TransAtlantic Petroleum Ltd. (down 0.07 cents or 18.92% to CAD 0.30).

Gold*: Gold futures added 1.10% to $1,970.00/oz.
