S&P/TSX Composite Pulled Down By Health Care & Energy, S&P 500 Hits Record High Since Feb

ON TSX: The benchmark equity gauge of the Toronto Stock Exchange, S&P/TSX Composite Index, ended lower on Tuesday (August 18), down by 30.06 points or 0.18% to 16,626.06. Healthcare and energy sectors dragged the index the lower. However, telecommunication services and technology stocks offset some of the losses. The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index gained 0.13 points or 0.017% to reach 751.0.

52W H/L: Andlauer Healthcare Group Inc., TFI International Inc. and Canadian Pacific Railway Limited are among the stocks that hit a new 52-week high on the TSX, their prices up by 7.59%, 4.15% and 0.60% respectively. On the other side, Just Energy Group Inc. and MediPharm Labs Corp. are among those that touched a new 52-week low and slumped by 2.33% and 4.49%, respectively.

ON Wall Street: The S&P 500 - the broadest equity gauge of Wall Street – closed at an all-time high of 3,389.78 (since February 19, 2020) on Tuesday, up 0.2%. The technology benchmark, Nasdaq Composite, also settled at a record high, up 0.72% or 81.118 to 11,211. The Dow Jones was the odd index out, ending the session lower 67 points or 0.2% at 27,778.07, dragged by energy and financial sectors.

Top Movers: Lundin Mining Corp (up 0.34 cents or 4.34% to CAD 8.17), BRP Inc (up 2.67 cents or 4.20% to CAD 66.22), and TFI International Inc (up 2.38 cents or 4.15% to CAD 59.67) respectively.

Bottom Movers: B2Gold Corp (down 0.66 cents or 6.95% to CAD 8.84), 0.19 (down 0.19 cents or 4.50% to CAD4.03) and Cenovus Energy Inc (down 0.25 cents or 3.63% to CAD 6.64).

Volume Leader: D-Box Technologies Inc. Class A, B2Gold Corp., StageZero Life Sciences Ltd. and Enbridge Inc.

Commodity Cues

Gold*: Gold futures up by 0.72% to US$2,013.10/oz.

Crude Oil*: WTI crude futures traded flat at US$ 42.89/bbl.

Forex*: Dollar Index traded 0.63% lower at 92.259 and CAD/USD (up 0.36% to 0.7566)
