S&P/TSX Composite moves into red zone, dragged by technologies and utilities

ON TSX: Canada’s broader equity gauge S&P/TSX Composite Index ended lower on Friday (August 14), down 0.09% to 16,514.61. On a weekly basis, the index gave up approximately 0.18%. Last week, the index settled in the red in three out of five trading sessions, reflecting bear forces taking control over bulls again. Technology and utilities sectors dragged the bourse lower while consumer cyclical and consumer non-cyclical extended some support. The junior benchmark S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index ended 0.50% lower at 737.65 on Friday.

West Fraser Timber Co Limited, Ritchie Bros Auctioneers Incorporated and Lithium Americas Corp registered new 52-week stock price high on the Toronto Stock Exchange, the shares surging by 5.26%, 1.18% and 7.74%, respectively. On the other side, Wall Financial Corporation and MediPharm Labs Corp are the only two stocks to register a new 52-week low on the TSX, doffing 2.7% and 4.85%, respectively.

On Wall Street: The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.12% to touch 27,931.02 on Friday. The index also bagged 1.81% over the week. The S&P 500 Index continued trading lower for the second consecutive day, down marginally by 0.02% to 3,372.85 on Friday. On a weekly basis, the index featured 0.64% gains. The technology benchmark index of the United States, Nasdaq Composite, traded 0.21% down to 11,019.30 on Friday. However, on a weekly basis, the index is up 0.08%.

Top Movers: Cineplex Inc (up 0.5 cents or 6.11% to CAD 8.69), Spin Master Corp (up 1.66 cents or 5.96% to CAD 29.50), MEG Energy Corp (up 0.22 cents or 5.57% to CAD 4.17), and West Fraser Timber Co Lt (up 3.45 cents or 5.26% to CAD 69.09)

Bottom Movers: Altus Group Ltd (down 2.31 cents or % to CAD 47.49), InterRent REIT (down 0.46 cents or 3.42% to CAD 13.0) and ECN Capital Corp. (down 0.15 cents or 2.83% to CAD 5.15) and Aphria Inc (down 0.0.16 cents or 2.61% to CAD 5.98).

Volume Leader: D-Box Technologies Inc. Class A, Zenabis Global Inc. and Enbridge Inc.

Gold*: Gold futures gave up 21 points or 1.05% to $1,949.0/oz.

Crude Oil*: WTI crude futures slumped 0.54% to US$ 42.01/bbl, and Brent Oil Futures gave up 0.36% to US$ 44.80/bbl.

Forex*: Dollar Index traded 0.26% lower at 93.10 and CAD/USD down 0.34% to 0.7536.
