S&P/TSX Composite Index Extending Gains on Tuesday

The benchmark index of the Canadian Sock Market- the S&P/TSX Composite Index extending gains of the previous session and was up by 22.59 points or 0.136% to 16,628.09 (at the time of writing At 9:45 a.m. ET (1330 GMT), as on August 11th, 2020). However, at the opening bell, the index opened lower, as material stocks pulled the index lower as gold prices tanked more than 4%.

TSX Venture Index off-setting gains of the last traded session on Tuesday and tumbled 23.61 points or 3.15% to 724.06. With Assure Holding Corp, Turmalina Metals Corp, Xebec Adsorption and Starr Peak Exploration Ltd are among those dragging the Index lower and down by 17.82%. 16.42%, 11.62% and 10.65% respectively.

Sector Summary

Performing: Energy, Consumer Cyclicals and Financials are the top performing sectors on the TSX Composite Index and up by 1.75%, 1.26% and 1.20% at the time of writing at 9:50 a.m. ET (1330 GMT).

Laggards: Basic Materials, Technology and Healthcare are among the laggards on the broader index and were down by 2.98%,1.92% and 1.55% respectively at the time of writing at 9:52 a.m. ET (1330 GMT).

Top Movers: Whitecap Resources Inc, Imperial Oil Ltd, CAE Inc, Suncor Energy Inc and Air Canada are the among the top movers on the TSX Composite Index and were up 5.97%, 4.57%, 4.53%, 4.25% and 4.25% respectively. At the time of writing at 9:54 a.m. ET (1330 GMT).

Bottom Movers: Silvercorp Metals Inc, Teranga Gold Corp, Pan American Silver Corp, First Majestic Silver Corp and Barrick Gold Corp are among the top laggards on the TSX Composite Index down by 8.24%, 7.34%, 7.26%, 7.10% and 6.76% respectively. at the time of writing at 9:55 a.m. ET (1330 GMT).

Volume Leaders: Baytex Energy Corp, Kinross Gold Corporation and Bombardier Inc (B) are the among the volume leaders on the TSX at the time of writing at 10:00 a.m. ET (1330 GMT).

Canadian Pacific Railway Limited, Stellar Jones Inc, Canadian National Railway Company, Hardwood Distribution Inc are the stocks testing their 52W Highs, on the other side, Helix BioPharma Corp is the only stocks hitting a 52W Low today at the time of writing at10:02 a.m. ET (1330 GMT).
