Highlights:

  • Defence Minister Anita Anand said that Canada would provide lethal aid shipments to Ukraine.
  • On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin had initiated military action against Ukraine.
  • The decision comes amid a series of measures adopted by Canada and its allies to stand against Russia's move of invading its demographic neighbour.

Russia and Belarus wouldn't enjoy the status of most-favoured-nation trade partners, said Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland on Thursday, March 3.

The federal government has revoked the status, which both the countries enjoyed under the provisions of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, Canada will impose a 35 per cent tariff on goods from Russia and Belarus.

Notably, North Korea was the only nation not to enjoy the most-favoured-nation status with Canada. Now, Russia and Belarus will feature alongside the isolated country.

In simple words, both the countries will not receive the benefit of low tarriffs that Canada offers to other countries and members of the WTO.

The decision comes amid a series of measures adopted by Canada and its allies to stand against Russia's move of invading its demographic neighbour.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin had initiated military action against Ukraine, and since then, the country has remained under attack.

The Deputy Prime Minister was joined by Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Anita Anand, the Minister of National Defence.

Let's take a look at what Sean Fraser said

The Minister of Immigration said that Canada will set up two new immigration streams for Ukrainians fleeing their country after Russia launched military action against the country.

Under the two streams, one would allow an unlimited number of Ukraine citizens to come to Canada on a temporary basis with expedited emergency visas.

Meanwhile, the other stream would focus on reuniting family members through a family sponsorship program.

Minister of National Defence's stance

Defence Minister Anita Anand said that Canada would provide lethal aid shipments to Ukraine. The Canadian Armed Forces will send their stockpile of around 7,500 hand grenades and 4,500 rocket launchers to Ukraine.

Canada will also send US$ 1 million to Ukraine for purchasing modern satellite imagery.

Bottom line

Multiple reports claimed that Mr Putin has vowed to continue fighting Ukraine. Meanwhile, some reports claimed on Thursday that both the countries are in talks to secure a ceasefire.

Russian forces continue to surround major cities in Ukraine and the country's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, reportedly said that Russia will have to pay for the invasion.
