BluGlass (ASX:BLG) has achieved a significant milestone in gallium nitride (GaN) laser technology, setting a new world record with its single-mode laser performance. The company successfully demonstrated an impressive 1,250 milliwatts (mW) of power from a single laser chip while maintaining a single-spatial mode. This achievement marks a 67% improvement over its previously reported 750mW performance.
The breakthrough was made possible through an innovative combination of a blue (450-nanometer) single-mode laser master oscillator and an integrated power amplifier within a single monolithic chip (SM-MOPA). This advanced design enhances power output with minimal beam distortion and reduced noise, a crucial factor for applications requiring high precision and stability.
Game-Changing Innovation for High-Precision Applications
The high-power SM-MOPA laser developed by BluGlass offers substantial benefits for industries that rely on stable and high-brightness lasers. The integration of a compact form factor with enhanced power output makes it highly valuable for applications in:
- Quantum sensing and navigation
- Next-generation defense and aviation
- Space and satellite communications
- Underwater light detection and ranging (LiDAR)
The ability to scale power while maintaining beam quality and precision is a major advancement, addressing key challenges faced by industries that demand high-performance laser solutions.
Advancing Industry Standards
BluGlass’ latest innovation aligns with the growing need for high-power, high-fidelity GaN lasers. These lasers are known for their precision, but manufacturing them at higher power levels has traditionally been challenging. By leveraging a monolithic chip design, BluGlass has significantly enhanced the efficiency of power scaling while reducing manufacturing complexity.
According to BluGlass CEO Jim Haden, this record-breaking development positions the company at the forefront of the laser industry. “These lasers pave the way for scalable, high-fidelity power, producing stable beams that can be efficiently packaged to meet next-generation application demands,” he stated.
The company’s advanced integration capabilities are expected to drive further innovations across various industries. The SM-MOPA technology eliminates several downstream packaging steps, reducing size, weight, and cost—particularly for defense applications.
Future Prospects
BluGlass continues to push the boundaries of GaN laser technology, reinforcing its role as a key industry innovator. The latest breakthrough is a direct response to market demand for increased power and precision, ensuring that the company remains a preferred partner for global industry leaders.
