  • Athena Resources partners on a green iron initiative
  • Focus on magnetite and hydrogen integration
  • Project unfolds in multi-stage development

Athena Resources Limited (ASX:AHN) has announced a key partnership to advance the Mid West Green Iron Project in Western Australia. This initiative sees Athena team up with Warradarge Energy Pty Ltd and Fenix Resources Limited (ASX:FEX) to form a joint venture company, Mid West Green Iron Pty Ltd, in an equal-share arrangement. Although not part of the ASX 200, this collaboration signals a promising step forward in Australia’s transition to low-emission industrial development.

Integrating Green Hydrogen with Iron Ore Expertise

The Mid West Green Iron Project is envisioned as a clean-energy solution, blending high-grade iron ore with green hydrogen to produce direct reduction iron products. Athena Resources brings to the table its ultra-high-grade magnetite from the Byro Magnetite Project, a key asset located in the region. Warradarge Energy complements this with its green hydrogen supply, while Fenix contributes with logistics and port operations via its subsidiary, Newhaul Pty Ltd.

This three-way alliance is designed to support the evolving demand for sustainable materials and low-carbon steelmaking alternatives. It also aligns with broader industry trends that emphasise decarbonisation and regional infrastructure development.

Phased Development for Long-Term Growth

The initiative is structured in three progressive stages: Validation, Demonstration, and Commercial Production. The initial Validation phase will test magnetite samples using innovative technologies aimed at enabling green iron production. Based on the outcomes, a demonstration plant will be established to assess practical scalability. The final goal is the development of a full-scale facility dedicated to green iron production, creating a new value chain within the region.

Each phase reflects a cautious and methodical approach, ensuring the project's technical and commercial feasibility before expanding operations. This staged strategy underscores the long-term potential of using domestic resources to power green manufacturing.

Strengthening the Local Value Chain

The partnership stands out for its regional synergy. Athena’s magnetite asset, Warradarge’s renewable hydrogen, and Fenix’s transport infrastructure collectively form a robust supply chain within the mid-west of Western Australia. This collaboration leverages each party’s strengths, creating an integrated solution for green steel supply.

With a focus on sustainable development and regional industrial growth, this joint venture has the potential to reshape how local iron ore resources are utilised in the emerging global green economy.
