Dispute Over Infrastructure Corridor

Altair Minerals (ASX:ALR) has initiated legal action against BHP (ASX:BHP) in South Australia’s Wardens Court, contesting the mining giant’s proposed infrastructure development linked to its Oak Dam deposit. The move comes amid growing attention on ASX 200 companies, with the sector witnessing heightened activity across significant mineral regions.

BHP has put forward a plan to construct an access road and supporting corridor connecting its Oak Dam project to the Olympic Domain highway. The proposal includes developing twin declines and associated infrastructure to enable advanced underground exploration at Oak Dam.

Altair Rejects Proposed Offer

Following BHP’s licence application under the South Australian Mining Act, Altair exercised its right to oppose the move. Both companies engaged in discussions to find a middle ground, with BHP extending an offer to Altair. However, Altair rejected the proposal, claiming it underestimated the true value of the Olympic Domain Project.

Altair countered with its own terms, yet no consensus was reached. The company maintains that it will continue to safeguard the inherent worth of its asset while pursuing exploration initiatives.

Exploration and Project Value

Despite the dispute, Altair confirmed that its exploration programs remain unaffected. The Olympic Domain Project is situated within South Australia’s Gawler Craton and is recognised as a significant iron-oxide copper-gold opportunity. Drilling efforts to date have already highlighted multiple areas that require further investigation.

Altair has emphasised that the project can only progress effectively if exploration is conducted free from potential obstacles created by BHP’s infrastructure plans. Alternatively, the company indicates it would consider a fair arrangement that properly reflects the project’s long-term value and exploration rights.

Looking Ahead

The outcome of this dispute will determine how development unfolds across one of South Australia’s most notable mineral regions. For Altair, the priority remains the protection of Olympic Domain’s core value, while ensuring its ongoing exploration activities continue without interruption.

As the case progresses, the mining sector will closely watch how the balance between infrastructure expansion and project ownership rights is addressed, potentially setting a precedent for future developments in the region.
