- Imugene advances azer-cel therapy for difficult lymphoma cases
- Capital raised supports pivotal Phase 2 clinical trial
- Positive early results boost development momentum
Imugene (ASX:IMU), a biotech company working on cutting-edge cancer immunotherapies, has announced a successful capital raise to further develop its off-the-shelf CAR-T therapy, azer-cel, targeting relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The fundraising comes on the heels of encouraging clinical trial results and will help propel the azer-cel program into a pivotal Phase 2 trial in the coming year.
While not part of the ASX 200, Imugene has been attracting growing interest in the biotech space due to its innovation in immune-oncology and its efforts to bring transformative cancer therapies to patients with limited treatment options.
The funds raised will be allocated in two parts. An initial placement brings in new capital through the issue of ordinary shares. This will be followed by a share purchase plan allowing eligible shareholders to participate on the same terms. Participants in both initiatives will also receive listed options, including additional “piggyback” options, offering future potential benefits as the company progresses.
This funding provides a solid financial base to support the transition of azer-cel into later-stage clinical trials. The therapy has already demonstrated meaningful activity in a Phase 1b trial, with multiple patients showing complete or partial responses. These findings provide a strong foundation for expanding clinical development into other B-cell-related blood cancers, such as primary central nervous system lymphoma and other niche indications where treatment options remain scarce.
Further strengthening its position, Imugene has received a research and development tax refund through the Australian Government’s incentive program. The refund enhances the company’s capacity to invest in its broader pipeline of cancer immunotherapies, maintaining momentum in its clinical goals.
Imugene plans to meet with the US Food and Drug Administration to discuss trial designs for a registrational study of azer-cel. This meeting will be a significant milestone as the company moves towards bringing its novel therapy closer to approval.
Through sustained research, strategic funding, and regulatory engagement, Imugene is positioning itself as a prominent player in the evolving landscape of cancer treatment. The recent developments reflect both the progress and promise of its therapies for patients with high unmet medical needs.
