- New pipeline aims to support energy security in the Northern Territory and expand gas supply.
APA Group (ASX:APA), a prominent Australian energy infrastructure operator, has entered a pivotal agreement to construct a gas pipeline in the Beetaloo sub-basin. Located southeast of Darwin, the Beetaloo sub-basin spans 28,000 square kilometers and holds an estimated 500 trillion cubic feet of untapped gas, marking it as one of the largest undeveloped gas reserves globally.
This agreement represents the first of several pipeline projects APA is considering to transport gas from this remote region, spurring exploration and development activities.
Sturt Plateau Pipeline Initiative
In a milestone for Northern Territory energy infrastructure, APA Group has partnered with Tamboran Resources and Daly Waters Energy to deliver the Sturt Plateau Pipeline (SPP). This pipeline will link Tamboran’s Shenandoah South pilot project to the Amadeus Gas Pipeline, creating a crucial connection for gas supply.
Spanning approximately 37 kilometers, the SPP will be designed, owned, and operated by APA Group. The project is scheduled for completion by early 2026, with construction costs estimated at $66.5 million.
Critical Role in Energy Transition
The development underscores APA Group’s strategic role in bolstering energy security and facilitating the energy transition. Gas remains a primary energy source for the Northern Territory, powering around 88% of the region's electricity. The new infrastructure is anticipated to ensure a steady gas supply as current resources are expected to deplete by 2026.
Tamboran Resources plans to leverage the Beetaloo sub-basin’s reserves to increase production to 2 billion cubic feet per day by 2030. This output is targeted to meet growing demands from Australia’s east coast, the Northern Territory, and Asia-Pacific markets.
APA Group’s chief executive, Adam Watson, emphasized the importance of the project in meeting future energy needs while supporting ongoing growth within APA’s gas transmission network.
This strategic collaboration marks a significant step in developing the Beetaloo sub-basin, reinforcing its potential to become a critical energy hub for the region. As the project progresses, it is set to drive growth in Australia’s energy infrastructure, ensuring a sustainable and secure supply for years to come.
