Aldi has once again been crowned the most affordable supermarket in Australia, according to the latest survey from consumer advocacy group Choice. The German grocery chain continues to outpace its major rivals Coles and Woolworths, offering significant savings for cost-conscious shoppers.
Survey Findings Highlight Aldi's Pricing Advantage
The survey, which compared prices at 104 supermarkets, revealed that a typical basket of 14 common household items costs A$18 less at Aldi than at Coles or Woolworths. Shoppers could expect to pay A$50.79 at Aldi, while Woolworths and Coles priced similar baskets at A$68.70 and A$69.91, respectively.
Items in the survey included essentials like apples, carrots, bread, flour, pasta, sugar, cheese, and beef mince. Despite minor price fluctuations, Coles and Woolworths remained almost identical in pricing, while Aldi’s competitive pricing helped it stand out. IGA, often viewed as a premium grocery option, had the highest prices, with a basket costing around A$78.95.
Sector Scrutiny and Government Oversight
This survey is part of a government initiative aimed at increasing transparency in grocery pricing. It comes at a time when supermarket pricing practices are under scrutiny, with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) taking action against Coles and Woolworths over allegations of misleading promotions.
As inflation and rising living costs continue to impact households, shoppers are likely to keep a close eye on grocery prices. The next Choice survey is expected in December, providing further insights into supermarket affordability trends.
