 Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.96%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the REITs, Materials and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.96% to hit a new 6-month high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were K92 Mining Inc (TSX:KNT), which rose 12.06% or 0.65 points to trade at 6.04 at the close. Orla Mining Ltd (TSX:OLA) added 11.33% or 0.41 points to end at 4.03 and First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR) was up 10.89% or 0.81 points to 8.25 in late trade.

Biggest losers included NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX:NXE), which lost 2.59% or 0.24 points to trade at 9.04 in late trade. Denison Mines Corp (TSX:DML) declined 2.42% or 0.06 points to end at 2.42 and Dollarama Inc (TSX:DOL) shed 2.06% or 2.04 points to 97.04.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 786 to 228 and 84 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 23.32% to 7.76 a new 52-week low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 2.42% or 48.30 to $2,041.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.73% or 1.19 to hit $69.80 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.88% or 1.38 to trade at $74.62 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.61% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.16% to 0.68.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.91% at 102.52.
