- MRIWA announces 2025 minerals research scholarships
- Students to contribute to WA’s critical minerals strategy
- Trailblazer program aims at strengthening local production
The Western Australian Government has reinforced its commitment to the future of the critical minerals industry with the launch of the 2025 student support program by the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA). Aimed at nurturing innovative researchers, the initiative supports students engaged in transformative research to enhance the sustainability and competitiveness of the state’s mineral sector.
Among the scholarship recipients this year are Kenneth Akiti, Yasamin Hamidian, and Faris Ullah, whose research spans key areas of mineral exploration and development. The new intake will help expand Australia’s research footprint across essential minerals used in clean energy technologies, battery storage, and advanced manufacturing.
WA's minerals sector continues to serve as a critical pillar in the state's economy, and with increasing demand for critical minerals globally, there’s a heightened focus on developing resilient, locally-driven solutions. Supporting this aim is the Trailblazer Universities Program, operated in partnership with Curtin University. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to reduce dependency on international supply chains and foster innovation in resource technology.
Under this program, researchers including Christofeel Wessels, Ahmed Ibrahim, Anvar Mammadi, and Philipa Opuku will pursue industry-level growth strategies for key critical minerals. Their work will be overseen as part of a collaborative model that aims to drive value and innovation across the sector.
In addition to scholarships, MRIWA is also backing the Co-operative Education for Enterprise Development (CEED) program, conducted through the University of Western Australia. Students such as Thi Bao Tram (Phoebe) Tran, Sarah Scott, Nikhil Nair Sunil Kumar, and Keely Gausten will focus on strategic projects that aim to deliver impactful outcomes for the state’s mining and minerals landscape.
The research and innovation supported through these programs have broader implications for ASX 200 share price movements, especially among companies in the critical minerals segment..
MRIWA’s continued efforts reflect a long-term vision to create a pipeline of talent and research that ensures the Western Australian minerals industry remains globally competitive, technologically advanced, and environmentally responsible. Through these initiatives, the state is shaping a knowledge-driven future for its resource economy.
