Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is reportedly leading a group of investors in an ambitious bid to acquire OpenAI, the artificial intelligence powerhouse behind ChatGPT. According to sources, the deal is valued at approximately $97.4 billion (A$155 billion), positioning Musk to gain significant control over the company.
This move comes as OpenAI, originally structured as a non-profit, has transformed into a for-profit entity with an estimated valuation of $100 billion. Under the leadership of CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI has rapidly evolved into a key player in the AI industry. However, the company’s shift toward profitability has been a point of contention, particularly for Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015.
Musk vs. Altman: A Long-Standing Rivalry
Musk and Altman have had an ongoing conflict over the direction of OpenAI. Musk has publicly criticized OpenAI’s transition from its original open-source and safety-focused mission to a more commercially driven approach. His legal representatives argue that the company should compensate its non-profit arm for the shift in its business model.
Musk’s attorney, Marc Toberoff, stated, “If Sam Altman and the present OpenAI, Inc. Board of Directors are intent on becoming a fully for-profit corporation, it is vital that the charity be fairly compensated for what its leadership is taking away from it: control over the most transformative technology of our time.”
Altman, on the other hand, dismissed Musk’s acquisition attempt with a sarcastic response on X, suggesting that OpenAI would be interested in purchasing X (formerly Twitter) for $9.74 billion.
Legal Battles Intensify
Musk first sued OpenAI in mid-2024, alleging that the company had misrepresented itself as a philanthropic organization. However, the lawsuit was dropped after OpenAI released emails from Musk that reportedly indicated his awareness of the need for profitability to sustain AI development.
Undeterred, Musk filed another lawsuit in August, accusing OpenAI of prioritizing profits over the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the greater good. He also alleged that OpenAI’s leadership engaged in racketeering.
Meanwhile, OpenAI countered by suggesting that Musk was simply frustrated about no longer being part of the company’s leadership after stepping away in 2018. At the time, Musk had attempted to integrate OpenAI with Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), but his proposal was rejected.
What’s Next for OpenAI?
As the legal and financial battles unfold, the future of OpenAI remains uncertain. With Musk’s continued push for control and OpenAI’s ongoing growth, the AI industry is set to witness significant developments in the coming months.
