EnviroCopper prepares for a lixiviant trial at the Kapunda Project in South Australia using in-situ recovery
Trial to assess oxide copper extraction and economic modelling, backed by BHP (ASX:BHP)
Infrastructure for the trial is complete, with further preparations underway
EnviroCopper Limited is moving forward within the metals and mining sector, particularly the copper segment, as it initiates preparations for a site environmental lixiviant trial at its Kapunda Project in South Australia. This project, supported under the Australian Securities Exchange through the ticker ECL, forms part of broader developments in the ASX 200 index. The in-situ recovery method under trial is focused on copper extraction in shallow, fractured rock aquifer settings.
The upcoming trial, scheduled to commence in the final quarter of the year and span into the first quarter of the following year, follows the company’s receipt of environmental approval for its environment protection and rehabilitation documentation. This regulatory milestone came from the Department for Energy and Mining in South Australia. The site environmental lixiviant trial, or SELT, is designed to validate copper extraction techniques and confirm aligned economic models for future applications.
BHP Group Limited (ASX:BHP), through its fully owned subsidiary OZ Minerals, is funding the trial under a research agreement executed earlier. This collaboration marks another step in advancing in-situ recovery for copper within established geological environments.
According to EnviroCopper's management, the company is continuing its development of in-situ recovery technologies at both the Kapunda and Alford West projects. The company aims to establish the viability of environmentally responsible copper production methods that do not require traditional open-pit or underground mining operations. This approach aligns with broader efforts in the sector to reduce surface disruption while enabling access to energy metals.
The infrastructure required for the Kapunda trial, including the well pattern, wellhouse, and related earthworks, has been completed. Additional on-site preparations are ongoing in anticipation of the formal commencement of operations. These steps ensure all physical systems are ready for data collection once lixiviant injection and extraction begin.
Alligator Energy Limited (ASX:AGE), a stakeholder in EnviroCopper, has expressed interest in the results of the trial. The company holds a minority share in EnviroCopper and previously secured an agreement to expand its position. Alligator Energy’s leadership has acknowledged the progress made in constructing the site and is monitoring developments closely.
The Kapunda trial is part of a long-term vision by EnviroCopper to develop what it describes as "invisible mines" — underground recovery operations that leave minimal surface impact. These projects are centered around the efficient and environmentally conscious extraction of copper and gold, offering an alternative path for resource development.
The broader market has seen interest in companies aligning with energy-transition objectives. As the in-situ recovery trial progresses, EnviroCopper's project stands out among developments in the copper space, which remains a key component in renewable energy infrastructure and global electrification trends.
