Volkswagen Group’s battery subsidiary, PowerCo, and QuantumScape (NYSE: QS) have entered into a groundbreaking agreement to bring QuantumScape’s next-generation solid-state lithium-metal battery technology to mass production. This strategic collaboration aims to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) battery market by leveraging the unique strengths of both companies.

Industrializing Solid-State Battery Technology

Under this new non-exclusive license agreement, QuantumScape will grant PowerCo the rights to manufacture battery cells using its cutting-edge solid-state technology platform. The license, contingent on satisfactory technical progress and specific royalty payments, allows PowerCo to produce up to 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery cells annually. The agreement also includes an option to expand production to 80 GWh per year, which could supply approximately one million vehicles annually.

This partnership replaces a previous joint venture between Volkswagen Group and QuantumScape and aims to expedite the commercial production of solid-state batteries. By focusing on large-scale production capabilities, both companies are positioned to meet the increasing global demand for advanced EV batteries efficiently.

Combining Expertise for Accelerated Production

The collaboration between PowerCo and QuantumScape is designed to maximize the synergies between QuantumScape’s innovative battery technology and PowerCo’s industrialization and manufacturing expertise. This partnership will involve a combined workforce initiative, creating a dedicated scale-up team with experts from both organizations. This team will focus on accelerating the industrialization processes required to bring QuantumScape’s technology to mass production.

Breakthrough Battery Technology

QuantumScape’s solid-state lithium-metal battery technology is based on its proprietary solid-state ceramic separator, which allows for the use of a pure lithium-metal anode. This breakthrough innovation promises significant improvements in energy and power density, faster charging times, and enhanced safety features compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. The superior performance characteristics of these batteries make them ideal for the next generation of electric vehicles.

Future Integration in Volkswagen Vehicles

The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to scale up the production of these advanced batteries for integration into a Volkswagen Group vehicle series. By combining QuantumScape’s technological advancements with PowerCo’s manufacturing prowess, the companies aim to create a product that will significantly enhance the performance and appeal of Volkswagen’s future electric vehicles.
