The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched an investigation into Nvidia following allegations from competitors that the company may have misused its dominant position in the AI chip market, according to a report by The Information.
The DOJ's inquiry centers on claims that Nvidia pressured cloud providers to check an array of its products. Additionally, the investigation is examining whether Nvidia imposed higher prices on its networking equipment for customers who opted for AI chips from rival companies like Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) and Intel.
Nvidia holds approximately 80% of the AI chip market, giving it significant influence over the industry. Despite the ongoing investigation, Nvidia has not commented directly on the matter. However, the company did release a statement emphasizing its commitment to lawful competition and innovation. "We compete based on decades of investment and innovation, scrupulously adhering to all laws, making Nvidia openly available in every cloud and on-prem for every enterprise, and ensuring that customers can choose whatever solution is best for them," said a Nvidia spokesperson to Reuters.
The DOJ has yet to respond to Reuters' request for comment. The Information’s report indicated that DOJ investigators have reached out to several of Nvidia's competitors to gather more information.
The investigation has gained support from U.S. progressive groups and Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, who have advocated for greater scrutiny of Nvidia's market practices. These groups, which focus on combating monopolies and promoting regulatory oversight of technology firms, have raised concerns about Nvidia's practice of bundling software and hardware. This practice has already drawn the attention of French antitrust authorities, who are preparing to file charges against Nvidia.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Nvidia's(NASDAQ:NVDA) business practices will be addressed and what impact this will have on the competitive landscape of the AI chip market.
