Highlights

  • 61% of cloud storage users expect their storage needs to more than double by 2028.
  • AI adoption is soaring, with storage ranked as the second most important AI infrastructure component.
  • Hard drives remain the dominant storage medium for cloud services, with 89% of data stored on them.

Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX) has unveiled significant findings from a commissioned global survey conducted by Recon Analytics, shedding light on the growing demand for AI-driven data storage. The survey, spanning 15 industries and 10 countries, highlights a clear trend: cloud storage users expect their storage requirements to more than double by 2028. This growth is driven largely by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing reliance on data storage for effective model training and optimization.

According to the study, 72% of respondents are already using AI in their operations, and storage ranks as the second most critical component of AI infrastructure, second only to security. The data underscores the essential role storage plays in enabling AI applications, particularly as businesses collect and process vast amounts of data to improve AI outcomes.

An important finding from the survey reveals that 90% of businesses adopting AI believe that longer data retention periods enhance the effectiveness of AI models. This supports the idea that organizations need to maintain data for extended periods to refine and improve their AI capabilities. Furthermore, 88% of respondents emphasize that Trustworthy AI, which is foundational to ethical and accurate AI applications, requires extended data storage duration to ensure both data integrity and model accuracy.

The study also highlights the continued dominance of hard drives in cloud storage services. According to estimates from IDC, 89% of data stored by leading cloud service providers is housed on hard drives. This enduring preference for hard drives is driven by their reliability, scalability, and ability to store vast amounts of data economically, making them well-suited for the evolving needs of AI-driven data retention.

Seagate’s survey findings reflect a critical juncture in the data storage industry, as businesses and organizations are increasingly turning to AI for competitive advantage. The need for longer data retention periods and robust storage solutions is more apparent than ever, and Seagate, a leader in storage technology, is well-positioned to cater to this growing demand.

As AI continues to advance, Seagate’s focus on high-capacity, reliable storage systems will play a vital role in enabling the infrastructure needed to support this transformation. The company's commitment to meeting the storage needs of businesses in the AI era is evident, as it seeks to provide innovative solutions that ensure the long-term retention of data while maintaining the integrity and trustworthiness of AI models.

With the survey pointing to the rapid acceleration of AI adoption and the increasing demand for scalable storage solutions, Seagate Technology is poised to lead the charge in meeting the global data storage challenges of tomorrow, further solidifying its position in the evolving tech landscape.
