In collaboration with IDC Componentes (IDC2) and Ilumiled, the city has authorized the replacement of 1,600 sodium-based lamps with state-of-the-art LED fixtures from Cree LED, a subsidiary of SGH (Nasdaq:SGH). This initiative not only focuses on energy efficiency but also prioritizes the preservation of the downtown area’s unique aesthetic.
At the heart of this upgrade is Cree LED’s JR5050C E Class LEDs, which utilize a 2200K color temperature (CCT). This technology is designed to replicate the warm ambiance of traditional sodium lamps while significantly improving overall light output and uniformity. The selected fixtures incorporate Sciolux LED modules from IDC2, expected to reduce the city’s power consumption by an impressive 58% over the next decade. This transition is projected to yield annual energy savings of approximately $80,000 USD, showcasing the project’s economic and environmental benefits.
Mayor Luis Nava expressed the importance of this upgrade, stating, “Maintaining the integrity of lighting in our beautiful 18th-century downtown area was vital, but we also recognized the need to modernize with better energy efficiency.” This sentiment captures the city’s dual commitment to sustainability and preservation, demonstrating that it is possible to honor historical aesthetics while embracing modern technology.
