Highlights:

  1. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi encourages passengers to wait a few extra minutes for rides to support the green economy.

  2. The company aims to have a fully electric fleet in London by the end of 2025, contingent on driver adoption of electric vehicles.

  3. Uber has introduced a £5,000 EV assistance package to expedite the transition to electric vehicles among its drivers.

Dara Khosrowshahi, the chief executive of Uber Technologies Inc {NYSE:UBER}, has called on passengers to contribute to the green economy by being patient when ordering rides. In a recent BBC interview, he urged customers to consider waiting a few extra minutes for their vehicle, asserting that “a couple of minutes isn't going to kill anyone.”

Uber offers the option for passengers to specifically order electric vehicles (EVs), promoting environmental sustainability within its services. Khosrowshahi remarked, "We're not saying, hey, wait 15 minutes, but if you have to wait another two or three minutes to help the environment, why not make that investment?" This appeal reflects the company's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

Currently, a significant portion of Uber's fleet consists of hybrid and combustion engine vehicles. However, the company has set a goal to transition to a 100% electric fleet in London by the end of 2025. Achieving this objective relies heavily on drivers opting to invest in fully electric vehicles. To facilitate this transition, Uber has introduced a £5,000 assistance package aimed at encouraging drivers to make the switch to EVs.

In addition to promoting electric vehicle adoption, Khosrowshahi has urged the UK Labour party to commit to a policy aimed at ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, a measure that was previously scrapped by the prior administration. This advocacy aligns with Uber's broader commitment to sustainability and reducing emissions in the transportation sector.
