Ribbon Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:RBBN), a leading provider of real-time communications technology and IP optical networking solutions, has made a significant impact in the industry with its announcement of the first demonstration of a compact modular solution supporting 400G ZR+. This innovative solution, which offers the potential for upgradability to 800G ZR+ on a single sled, was showcased at the NGON/NetworkX event, highlighting Ribbon's commitment to advancing network technology.
As the telecommunications industry faces the challenges brought by the age of artificial intelligence (AI), there is an increasing demand for efficient and cost-effective transport solutions. Sam Bucci, COO and EVP of Ribbon, stated, "The age of AI demands power and cost-optimized metro and long-haul transport, and Ribbon is leading the way with its programmable solutions." This sentiment captures the essence of Ribbon’s demonstration, which showcased how the company is addressing the evolving needs of service providers and enterprises.
The live demonstration operated on Ribbon's 9408 compact modular platform, which boasts an impressive density of 25.6 terabits per 2 rack units (2RU) and consumes less than 0.07 watts per gigabit (W/G). These specifications significantly reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) by saving space, electrical power, and cooling costs—essential factors for operators looking to maximize efficiency and minimize operational expenditures.
Ribbon's rapid adoption of new technology is evident in the integration of Acacia's 131Gbaud 800G ZR+ QSFP-DD transceiver, enhanced by interoperable physical coding sublayer (PCS) technology, and powered by its advanced 4nm Delphi digital signal processor (DSP). This combination not only reinforces Ribbon’s innovative edge but also ensures compatibility and scalability for future upgrades.
The 9408 platform supports a range of technologies, including 5nm-140Gbaud, optimizing capacity and reach for transport applications. This flexibility enables operators to handle wavelengths up to 1.2 terabits, further cementing Ribbon's position as a leader in the evolving optical networking landscape.
Attendees at NGON/NetworkX have the opportunity to explore Ribbon’s offerings in more detail at Booth A1. The company is also hosting a session titled "Get Ready for Game-Changing Low Power Small Form Factor 800G Optical Transport" on Thursday, October 10, at 14:10 CET. This session will provide insights into the future of optical transport and how Ribbon’s solutions can facilitate network transformation.
