Highlights

  • Strategic Acquisition: onsemi to acquire Qorvo’s Silicon Carbide Junction Field-Effect Transistor (SiC JFET) technology and United Silicon Carbide subsidiary for $115 million in cash.
  • Expanding Market Reach: The deal positions onsemi to address high energy efficiency demands in AI data centers, with a projected $1.3 billion market opportunity in five years.
  • Emerging Markets Targeted: Acquisition accelerates onsemi’s capabilities in EV battery disconnects and solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs).

onsemi (Nasdaq:ON), a leader in intelligent power and sensing technologies, today announced an agreement to acquire the Silicon Carbide Junction Field-Effect Transistor (SiC JFET) technology business from Qorvo. This $115 million cash transaction also includes Qorvo’s United Silicon Carbide subsidiary.

The acquisition will complement onsemi’s EliteSiC power portfolio, enhancing its ability to meet the growing demand for high energy efficiency and power density in AI data centers. Additionally, the deal will expand onsemi’s footprint in emerging markets like electric vehicle (EV) battery disconnects and solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs).

SiC JFET Technology Advantages

SiC JFETs provide the lowest on-resistance per chip area, requiring less than half the space of alternative technologies. These devices are compatible with existing off-the-shelf drivers traditionally used with silicon-based transistors, simplifying adoption and reducing development time and costs. The benefits include:

  • Faster development cycles.
  • Reduced energy consumption.
  • Lower system costs.

This makes SiC JFETs ideal for high-efficiency AC-DC power supply units in data centers and other demanding applications.

“With AI workloads becoming increasingly complex and energy-intensive, reliable SiC JFETs are crucial for optimizing power efficiency and handling high voltages,” said Simon Keeton, Group President and General Manager of onsemi’s Power Solutions Group. “The addition of Qorvo’s industry-leading technology enhances our EliteSiC portfolio, providing customers with solutions to optimize energy consumption and increase power density.”

Market Growth Potential

The acquisition is expected to expand onsemi’s market opportunity by $1.3 billion over the next five years. With the rapid global growth of AI infrastructure, demand for energy-efficient power supply solutions is surging. The integration of Qorvo’s SiC JFET technology will strengthen onsemi’s position in the high-growth power semiconductor market.

Additionally, the technology’s application in EV battery systems and SSCBs diversifies onsemi’s market exposure, aligning with its strategy to address megatrends in electrification and sustainability.

Transaction Details

The deal is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to finalize in Q1 2025.
