Northern Trust (Nasdaq:NTRS) has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National University of Singapore (NUS) to drive innovation in green finance and promote the adoption of blockchain technology. This partnership aims to create actionable solutions for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) finance challenges while fostering academic collaboration and talent development in blockchain technology.
The collaboration will focus on cutting-edge research and practical initiatives, including a tokenization project leveraging Northern Trust’s Matrix Zenith platform. This initiative aims to bring the green credentials of bonds onto the blockchain, enhancing transparency and streamlining regulatory reporting for investors. By aligning with global sustainability standards, this development is set to improve accountability and reliability in ESG investment practices.
Tokenizing Green Assets
A key component of the MoU is the creation of a framework for tokenizing green assets. This framework will enable issuers and investors to better verify ESG claims and meet regulatory requirements, ensuring greater transparency and accountability in sustainable investment portfolios. Justin Chapman, Global Head of Digital at Northern Trust, emphasized the importance of integrating advanced technology with sustainable investment practices to drive innovation and accountability in green finance.
Academic Collaboration with NUS
The partnership extends to academic engagement through Northern Trust’s involvement with the Singapore Blockchain Innovation Programme (SBIP), a research lab within the NUS School of Computing (SoC). Research fellows and PhD candidates from SoC will participate in designing and developing blockchain solutions, fostering talent development in the field and furthering the university’s contributions to sustainable technology.
Commitment to Green Finance
This MoU highlights Northern Trust’s commitment to advancing green finance by integrating technology into sustainable investment practices. The collaboration with NUS is expected to not only provide tangible solutions to ESG finance challenges but also position Singapore as a hub for innovation in green finance and blockchain research.
