Astera Labs, Inc., a prominent name in semiconductor-based connectivity solutions, has announced a groundbreaking portfolio of fabric switches specifically designed to address the challenges of AI workloads in cloud environments. The Scorpio Smart Fabric Switch portfolio includes the industry's first PCIe® 6 switch, engineered to optimize performance for accelerated computing platforms deployed at cloud scale.
This innovative portfolio comprises two specialized product lines with a clear multi-generational roadmap. The Scorpio P-Series is tailored for GPU-to-CPU/NIC/SSD PCIe 6 connectivity. It supports mixed traffic head-node connectivity across a diverse ecosystem of PCIe hosts and endpoints. On the other hand, the Scorpio X-Series focuses on back-end GPU clustering, delivering the highest GPU-to-GPU bandwidth with platform-specific customizations.
Jitendra Mohan, Chief Executive Officer of Astera Labs, highlighted the urgency of meeting hyperscalers' evolving demands. "Hyperscalers are deploying highly specialized AI platforms at an unprecedented pace, scale, and complexity. Our new Scorpio Smart Fabric Switch portfolio delivers maximum system utilization and uptime for two specific AI use cases – scale-out PCIe connectivity with Scorpio P-Series and back-end, scale-up GPU clustering with Scorpio X-Series," he stated. Mohan emphasized that Scorpio offers energy-efficient fabric solutions that ensure predictable, secure, and high-performance data flows, crucial for accelerated AI infrastructure deployments.
Patrick Moorhead, Founder and CEO of Moor Insights & Strategy, further contextualized the significance of the Scorpio launch. "Hyperscalers and AI platform providers developing systems for training and inferencing workloads have traditionally relied on PCIe switches designed for general-purpose applications. These switches can be complex and power-hungry, leading to longer system development cycles. Astera Labs is addressing the industry's need for a more efficient fabric solution tailored to the specific requirements of AI workloads," he noted.
The Scorpio Smart Fabric Switches are an expansion of Astera Labs’ Intelligent Connectivity Platform, integrating seamlessly with the Connectivity System Management and Optimization Software (COSMOS) suite. This integration provides a smart, customizable connectivity backbone, offering unprecedented observability, enhanced security, and extensive fleet management capabilities. Scorpio’s features enable deep insights into the operational state and health of accelerated computing platforms, ensuring maximum uptime and availability.
To ensure reliability and performance, Scorpio Smart Fabric Switches have been rigorously tested in Astera Labs’ Cloud-Scale Interop Lab, as well as in customer platforms. The switches are now shipping in pre-production quantities for head-node PCIe 6 connectivity, ready to support AI platform deployments that utilize leading GPUs. They offer plug-and-play interoperability, advanced diagnostics, telemetry, and comprehensive design collateral.
Brian Kelleher, Senior Vice President of GPU Engineering at NVIDIA, acknowledged the critical role of the Scorpio portfolio in AI infrastructure. "AI infrastructure requires the right balance of interconnect performance, efficiency, and capabilities to enable accelerated computing for AI workloads at scale. The new Scorpio fabric switch portfolio can support NVIDIA accelerated AI infrastructure deployments across a wide variety of AI and HPC workloads."
