Cathay Pacific will obtain 30 Airbus A330-900 wide-body aircraft, with options for an additional 30, the Hong Kong-based airline announced on Wednesday. Delivery is expected by the end of 2031, the airline stated. The new planes are intended to replace existing aircraft and will primarily serve regional routes within Asia, with the flexibility to be used on longer-haul routes in the future, according to Cathay. While Cathay did not disclose the acquisition price, it mentioned that the basic price for 30 A330s is $11 billion, and significant price concessions were negotiated. This acquisition highlights a strategic move within the industrial stocks sector as Cathay Pacific continues to enhance its fleet, which currently includes a mix of Boeing and Airbus aircraft.
The airline first publicly indicated the possibility of acquiring mid-sized wide-body aircraft in late 2022.
Planemaker Airbus highlights that its A330-900 jets, the largest model of the new-generation A330neo family, can seat up to 460 passengers and reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 25% compared to previous generation aircraft.
