Spectral AI Inc. (NASDAQ:MDAI) has underscored the role of its DeepView System in addressing disparities in burn care access, as highlighted by a recent report from the American Burn Association (ABA). The report, featured in the January/February 2024 edition of the Journal of Burn Care & Research, identified significant barriers to specialized burn care in the United States, particularly for rural and pediatric patients.
The report emphasized the unequal distribution of ABA-verified burn centers across the country, leading to longer travel distances and higher transportation costs, especially in rural regions. Pediatric patients, on average, travel 30.5 miles farther than adult patients to reach a burn center, while rural patients travel 50% farther than their urban counterparts. Air transport, which is frequently required in remote areas, further contributes to elevated costs. This disparity is most pronounced in regions such as the Mountain West and Southeastern US, where access to burn centers is particularly limited. These challenges in accessing timely burn care have the potential to negatively impact long-term patient outcomes.
The CEO of Spectral AI, Peter Carlson, remarked on the critical need for specialized burn care facilities to minimize burn-related morbidity and mortality. He noted that the increased transportation costs associated with accessing these facilities add to the already existing challenges faced by rural and pediatric patients.
Spectral AI's DeepView System aims to mitigate these challenges by providing healthcare providers with a tool to assess burn wound healing. This system leverages an advanced image processing algorithm, utilizing multispectral imaging data that has been trained on a proprietary database of over 340 billion clinically validated data points. By offering a timely and accurate wound assessment, DeepView enables healthcare professionals to make informed treatment decisions, whether the patient is treated at a specialized burn center or a local facility.
The system represents a significant advancement in healthcare technology, designed to empower medical professionals with immediate, objective insights that facilitate better patient care.
