Immunic Inc (NASDAQ:IMUX) is a biotechnology company focused on developing orally administered small molecule therapies for chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The company’s lead candidate, vidofludimus calcium (IMU-838), is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials for multiple sclerosis (MS) and has demonstrated therapeutic activity in earlier Phase 2 trials, particularly in patients with relapsing-remitting MS and moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis. This compound selectively inhibits activated immune cells, showcasing anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and neuroprotective properties.
On September 18, 2024, Immunic announced key findings regarding vidofludimus calcium at the 40th Congress of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS). Data from the Phase 2 CALLIPER trial revealed that the drug consistently reduced neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels, indicating its potential to slow disease progression across various MS subtypes. Additionally, it may help alleviate fatigue in MS patients by preventing reactivation of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is associated with increased fatigue levels. Preclinical studies have also suggested neuroprotective effects linked to Nurr1 activation, which could enhance neuronal survival.
In a significant expansion of its research scope, Immunic has initiated an investigator-sponsored Phase 2 trial evaluating vidofludimus calcium for post-COVID syndrome, with the first patient enrolled in early September. The RAPID_REVIVE study is backed by funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, showcasing the compound’s versatility in addressing diverse health challenges.
Dr. Andreas Muehler, Immunic’s Chief Medical Officer, highlighted the company’s strong presence at the ECTRIMS Congress, marking a milestone with its own booth for the first time. The event allowed Immunic to showcase data from four posters, including insights from the CALLIPER trial and the drug's potential effects on MS-related fatigue and antiviral properties.
With critical milestones ahead, including the CALLIPER trial readout scheduled for April 2025, Immunic Inc continues to solidify its role in advancing treatments for MS and exploring new therapeutic avenues for patients with unmet medical needs.
