GE Healthcare (Nasdaq:GEHC) has announced a strategic acquisition aimed at bolstering its capabilities in clinical artificial intelligence (AI) software. The agreement involves acquiring Intelligent Ultrasound Group PLC’s (Intelligent Ultrasound) AI software business for approximately $51 million. Intelligent Ultrasound is renowned for its AI-driven image analysis tools, which are designed to enhance the efficiency and intelligence of ultrasound technology.

The acquisition is set to integrate Intelligent Ultrasound’s innovative ScanNav Assist AI technology into GE HealthCare’s ultrasound portfolio. This technology currently powers SonoLystlive and SonoLyst X/IR on GE HealthCare’s Voluson™ Expert, Voluson Signature, and Voluson SWIFT ultrasound devices. By incorporating these AI solutions, GE HealthCare aims to streamline workflows, improve ease-of-use for clinicians, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes.

In addition to acquiring advanced AI technologies, GE HealthCare will also onboard Intelligent Ultrasound’s research and development team. This team will play a pivotal role in driving further innovation in AI-enabled image recognition, particularly focusing on Women’s Health ultrasound devices and expanding across GE HealthCare’s broader portfolio.

This strategic move follows GE HealthCare’s previous acquisition of Caption Health in 2023, which similarly bolstered its AI capabilities in image guidance and disease detection. These advancements are crucial in addressing challenges faced by healthcare providers, such as radiology technologist shortages and musculoskeletal disorders among sonographers. AI-enabled protocols are expected to alleviate these burdens by automating manual processes, ensuring consistency across exams, and enabling clinicians to concentrate more on patient care.

Furthermore, this acquisition strengthens GE HealthCare’s position in the AI-enabled medical device market. The company currently leads in AI-enabled device authorizations by the FDA among medical technology firms. This aligns with GE HealthCare’s strategy to enhance precision care, optimize clinical workflows, and elevate the quality of patient care throughout the care continuum.

As part of the agreement, Intelligent Ultrasound will refocus its efforts on advancing its ultrasound simulation technology, which is pivotal for enhancing ultrasound education. This strategic refocusing allows Intelligent Ultrasound to leverage its expertise in simulation technology while GE HealthCare harnesses AI-driven innovations to drive efficiency and efficacy in clinical settings.

To summarise, GE HealthCare’s acquisition of Intelligent Ultrasound’s clinical AI software business marks a significant step forward in enhancing its ultrasound capabilities and expanding its AI footprint in healthcare. By integrating cutting-edge AI technologies, GE HealthCare reaffirms its commitment to advancing healthcare through innovation, addressing clinical challenges, and improving patient outcomes across the globe.
