California American Water has announced a transformative partnership with Paired Power, a leading U.S. manufacturer of solar microgrids, to enhance the sustainability of its San Diego District electric vehicle (EV) fleet. The new initiative will leverage Paired Power’s innovative PairTree technology, a solar canopy that combines solar energy, battery storage, and grid power to provide resilient and reliable charging for electric vehicles.

The PairTree system, designed and manufactured in the U.S., offers a versatile solution for EV charging. It operates independently of the traditional power grid, providing continuous charging capabilities both day and night. This technology also functions as an emergency backup power source during grid outages, thereby reducing reliance on external energy sources and ensuring uninterrupted service.

Kevin Tilden, President of California American Water, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: "We are excited to work with Paired Power to complete this important project that will allow us to reduce our carbon footprint and lower long-term costs for our customers. Utilizing Paired Power’s clean electric power and storage reflects California American Water’s disaster preparedness and commitment to helping meet California’s emission reduction goals, while improving local air quality, health, and safety."

This collaboration underscores California American Water’s dedication to environmental stewardship and public health. By investing in EV infrastructure and solar-powered charging solutions, the company aims to safeguard both the environment and public health. According to the EPA’s emission rates calculator, using PairTree to charge one vehicle can prevent approximately 4,472 pounds of CO2 emissions annually—equivalent to the weight of a Tesla Model Y.

Tom McCalmont, CEO of Paired Power, commented on the partnership: "We’re honored that California American Water chose Paired Power to help power its electric vehicles. We designed PairTree with the future in mind, and it’s exciting to see our charging solution embraced by such a respected and forward-thinking company that serves three-quarters of a million Californians."

The installation of the PairTree system is a significant step in California American Water’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and customer service. The integration of clean solar power with advanced EV charging technology aligns perfectly with the company's legacy of responsible stewardship of California’s land, air, and water resources.
