  1. Tesla is rolling out a software update for over 1.6 million vehicles in China to address a potential safety risk related to the hood latch.
  2. The update aims to fix an issue where the hood may open unexpectedly while driving, which could increase the risk of accidents.
  3. This update affects a range of models, including imported Model S and Model X, as well as locally produced Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from late 2020 to mid-2024.

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is deploying a software update to address a safety issue with the hood latch on over 1.6 million cars in China. According to the State Administration for Market Regulation, the latch assembly problem may sometimes prevent the driver from being alerted about an unlocked front hood. This issue could result in the hood fully opening while the vehicle is in motion, posing a risk of collision.

The update will be distributed over-the-air to imported Model S and Model X vehicles, as well as Model 3 and Model Y cars manufactured locally between October 2020 and July 2024. Tesla is also providing alternative solutions for cars that cannot be fixed through the software update. As of June, around 1.9 million Teslas were registered in China, making it the largest market for the company outside of the US. This development is notable for those tracking automobile stocks, as Tesla's performance in China significantly impacts its global market standing.

This recall follows a similar action in the US, where more than 1.8 million Teslas were recalled last month due to complaints of hoods unintentionally opening. The issue was first investigated in March for Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China, with a latch switch deformation identified as the cause in April. This recall is the second significant one this year in China for Tesla, the first being in January for 1.6 million vehicles to address an issue with the Autopilot system.
