Donald Trump Jr.’s surprise visit to Greenland has reignited speculation around his father’s controversial interest in acquiring the resource-rich Arctic island.

The trip, which Donald Trump Jr. described as a “very long personal day trip,” follows US President-elect Donald Trump’s recent claims that Greenland’s inclusion in the US is an “absolute necessity” for national security and economic prosperity.

Arriving in Nuuk aboard “Trump Force One,” the private jet owned by his father, Trump Jr. spent several hours in Greenland’s snow-covered capital.

Despite the low-profile nature of the visit—devoid of meetings with Greenlandic or Danish officials—the timing and context have drawn significant global attention.

People of Greenland are ‘MAGA’, claims Trump

President-elect Trump sparked fresh controversy last month by declaring that Greenland and its people would “benefit tremendously” as part of the US.

On Monday, President-elect Trump claimed in a Truth Social post he was “hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA’.”

Accompanying the post was a video featuring a man, reportedly from Greenland, expressing support for the US ownership of the island.

In the clip, a woman is heard asking, “If you could tell Trump anything, what would it be?”

The man, sporting a MAGA hat, responds, “Buy us. Buy Greenland.”

Meanwhile, Trump Jr. said in a podcast on Monday said: “No, I am not buying Greenland.”

“Funny enough, I’m actually going on a very long personal day trip to Greenland.”

Prevoiusly, Danish officials, including Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, had firmly rejected the idea, prompting Trump to cancel a scheduled trip to Denmark.

Greenland’s leadership remains steadfast in its opposition to any such discussions.

Prime Minister Mute Egede has reiterated that “Greenland is not for sale” and emphasized the island’s growing push for independence from Denmark.

Egede’s New Year address highlighted the need to break free from “colonial shackles,” reflecting deepening tensions in Denmark-Greenland relations.

Meanwhile, Denmark has maintained a diplomatic stance, with Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen reaffirming Greenland’s sovereignty.

The timing of Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland

However, the timing of Trump’s renewed interest has coincided with Denmark announcing a significant increase in its defense spending on the island—a move some interpret as a strategic response to Trump’s ambitions.

Strategically located between North America and Europe, Greenland’s importance extends beyond its vast natural resources, including rare earth minerals, to its geopolitical relevance for US defense and space operations.

Home to a significant US space facility, the island has long been viewed as a critical asset by American policymakers.

Despite Greenland’s strategic allure, the idea of US ownership continues to polarize opinions.

Danish and Greenlandic leaders have dismissed Trump’s comments as overreach, while some Greenlanders have criticized Denmark’s colonial history.

In a video shared by Trump, an unidentified man from Greenland wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat claimed US ownership could “free the island from Danish colonization.”

As Trump prepares to take office, his unconventional approach to foreign policy—whether regarding Greenland or broader geopolitical issues like the Panama Canal—signals a willingness to challenge diplomatic norms.

While his son’s trip may have been unofficial, it has added fuel to an already contentious debate about Greenland’s future.
