On Monday, more than 200 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested during a sit-in outside the New York Stock Exchange. Demonstrators gathered to express their opposition to U.S. support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The protest, organized by several activist groups including Jewish Voice for Peace, featured chants such as "Let Gaza live" and "Stop funding genocide" as they demanded a halt to defense aid.
The event took place in front of the exchange's iconic building in lower Manhattan, where demonstrators voiced their concerns about U.S. involvement in the conflict. Although no one entered the stock exchange itself, many protesters crossed a police barricade on Broad Street, which led to the mass arrests.
While a police spokesperson confirmed the number of arrests, no further details were provided. The protest drew around 500 participants, as reported by those organizing the demonstration. The stock exchange made no comment regarding the protest.
Protesters specifically criticized American defense contractors and weapons manufacturers involved in the ongoing conflict. Chants also targeted Israeli military operations in Lebanon, where Israel is engaged with Hezbollah militants. This protest is part of a broader movement opposing U.S. foreign policy and defense relations regarding Israel and its military actions.
These demonstrations come in the wake of an Israeli offensive in Gaza, which followed a Hamas-led attack on Israel. The violence, which began in early October, has resulted in widespread casualties, with significant loss of life and displacement in Gaza.
